#1. Travel the Transfagarasan
How about going for a scenic drive, but not just any old drive? We’re not kidding when we say that you’ve never been on a road quite like it. Imagine a twisting and coiling snake, and that pretty much sums up the drive that you will take while driving the 55-mile scenic route of Transfagarasan.
But not only is the road impressive, but the mountain and valley views are also phenomenal. It’s been labeled on a number of occasions as the best scenic drive in the world and also the second-highest paved road in Romania.
#2. Kopasz-Detunata
Another mesmerizing sight to see, the Kopasz-Detunata is a stunning rock formation of basalt rock columns that shoot up dramatically. They’re located in the Metaliferi Mountains and the hike itself will take you right around 2 kilometers. It is difficult at points with steep and rocky surfaces to trek. But don’t let that stop you, Detunata is worth the visit.
#3. Hike the Apuseni Mountains
You can’t experience Transylvania without witnessing the Apuseni Mountains. And what better way of seeing them than by hiking one of their trails? If you’re feeling extra adventurous and hoping to become a true mountaineer, we dare you to take the 10 days 87 km. hike in the Apuseni Mountains. You might grow a few chest hairs after such an epic hike.
#4. Bear Watching
Did you know that Romania has the largest brown bear population in all of Europe? (Besides Russia) There are an estimated 5,000 bears roaming throughout the country, so you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for them if you’re hoping to come across some.
#5. Visit Where the Legends of Dracula were Born
So unless your father didn’t try and scare you with scary blood-sucking vampire bedtime stories when you were a kid, you undoubtedly know of the legend of Dracula. “I vant to suck your blood.” Sorry, that was bad. Come explore for yourself the very castle that inspired such a twisted tale. Bran Castle. This beautiful 15th-century castle is remarkable and can still be toured today.
#6. Explore Neat cities
Transylvania is filled with medieval towns, fortresses, and castles. Even the cottages are impressive with how long they’ve withstood time. Brasov, Sibiu, and Cluj-Napoca are just a few Transylvanian cities you’ll want to visit that are filled with amazing architecture.

#7. Scarisoara Ice Cave
The last destination on our list is one that you’ll want to dress warmly for while exploring this natural underground wonder. Part of the Carpathian Chain, the Scarisoara Ice Cave is the largest ice caves in Romania.
You could also think of it as the largest underground glacier in Romania. The reason for all the ice has nothing to do with nasty temperatures, but because of the cave’s ventilation system that creates the perfect glacier environment. The cave is located in Apuseni National Park.
#8. Romanian Food
We’ll keep this short because we could write a whole article on amazing Romanian dishes that you’ll want to try when you visit. When you get there, be sure that you find a vendor or restaurant where you can try their cabbage rolls, Sarmale, Mici, and Cozonac.
