Top 10 Things to Do in Iceland

To this day, Iceland is my favorite place I have ever explored. (And not just because I went there on my honeymoon!) If you plan on visiting this Nordic island, set aside at least a week to see the country. There are many ways to tour Iceland, but renting a car is the most efficient way to see everything. If you’re questioning spending money on a car, trust me, it makes all the difference. Here are just a few things you should do to make the most of your time in Iceland.

Glacier Hike

When I went to Iceland, I hiked up Sólheimajökull, a glacier in South Iceland. Those three hours were probably my favorite part of the trip. The world’s glaciers recede every year, so book a guided trip while you still can!

Drive the Golden Circle

The Golden Circle contains some of the biggest attractions in Iceland. In one day, you can see the famous geysirs, Þingvellir National Park, and Gullfoss Waterfall. If you don’t want to rent a car for your entire trip, your day around the Golden Circle is the one day you should get a car.

Explore Reykjavík

While I believe everyone should venture outside Reykjavík during their trip, I can’t deny that the country’s capital is worth seeing. Go to the top of the Perlan, or “The Pearl,” for a 360-degree view of the city. Search the streets for interesting restaurants and shops selling wool sweaters.

Visit Waterfalls

My favorite waterfall is the aforementioned Gullfoss Waterfall in the Golden Circle. Svartifoss, Goðafoss, and Seljalandsfoss are also worth seeing. Wherever you decide to go in Iceland, there is probably a gorgeous waterfall nearby.

Look for the Northern Lights

Iceland is one of the best countries in the world to spot the Northern Lights. Travel to Iceland from September to April to witness one of the greatest natural wonders in the world.

Whale Watch

Summer travelers are more likely to see whales during their trip. You can easily find a travel agency that will take you on a tour to the best spots. Check out the agencies Gentle Giants and Elding.

Ride Horses

Tourists love to ride Iceland’s unique, tiny horses. Although they are technically horses, they look a bit like ponies. Book a trip through one of several companies, including Active North and Adventure Vikings.

See Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Gazing at one of the most beautiful spots in Iceland is free. If you want a more in-depth look at the lagoon, you can book a boat tour if you’re in the country between May and September. However, even if you’re in Iceland outside of the boat tour season, you should still ask if the boats are running. If the weather is good, the boat tours continue outside of the usual season.

Swim in the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon might be the most touristy attraction in Iceland, but it’s still worth a visit. The bright blue water and surrounding mountains make for a peaceful environment. For no extra charge, employees give you face masks and take your photos.

Tour the Fjords

There are fjords all around the outskirts of Iceland, except down south. Drive to the remote Westfjords region, where you will find Ísafjarðardjúp, the largest fjord in Iceland.
