Which pets can travel on trains for free in Italy?
Trenitalia has announced that passengers can bring their small pets with them on the train this summer at no extra charge. However, they can’t sit on your lap or lay at your feet. Basically, cats, dogs and other pets can travel free if they fit in a carrier measuring a maximum of 70x30x50 cm {27.5x12x20 in). Only one pet is allowed per passenger and they must remain in the carrier throughout the journey.
This great summer offer is valid on Trenitalia’s Freccia e Intercity trains, whether passengers travel in first and second-class carriages. They are also allowed for passengers with Business, Executive, Premium, or standard tickets. The offer is valid until September 15, 2022
Meanwhile, rail companies, Italo and Italiarail, also permit dogs weighing 5 kg {11 lb) or less to travel free in a carrier.
What about larger dogs?
Larger dogs are allowed to travel on Trenitalia trains, but not for free. They will be asked to pay the pet ticket price, which varies depending on the passenger’s ticket. Being large, in this case, no carrier is required but the dogs must be kept on a leash and wear a muzzle.
How do you get a pet ticket?
However, larger dogs are not allowed in Executive or Premium service carriages. Moreover, they do not have access to the Working Area, Quiet Zone or Private seating areas. It should be noted that larger dogs are not permitted to travel on regional trains between 7 am and 9 am, Monday to Friday.
Larger dogs also need a ticket on Italo trains, priced depending on the journey. In fact, this operator permits large dogs to travel in a “reserved space” next to passengers.
What does your dog need to travel by train?
Dog owners are requested to bring their dog’s canine registry certificate and health booklet when traveling. When it comes to international travelers, a pet passport is accepted instead. Meanwhile, pet passports can be obtained from an authorized vet in Europe.
Pet-friendly accommodation in Italy
Pet-friendly accommodation options are available throughout the country. For example, in Sicily, the rental site Villatravellers has a selection of villas that welcome pets.
Moreover, Rome is considered one of the best Italian cities for travelers on vacation with their pets. In fact, there are almost 600 hotels that welcome guests’ family pets.
Beware of the summer heat
Always bear in mind that Italy gets pretty hot in the summer months. For this reason, owners should take a number of precautions for the family pet on vacation.
Try to only take your pets for walks early in the morning or evening. Short walks are OK during the day if plenty of shade is available. Always ensure that your pets have plenty of water and never, ever, leave them inside a hot car.
